Kinder Smith was a known member of the Archer Gang. Kinder was
born in 1857. Kinder is reported as being a nephew of the
Archer's. In 1880, Kinder is listed in the U.S. Census as working
as a farm laborer for the Dayhuff family. Kinder was living with
the Dayhuff family at this time.
In March of 1886, after the lynching of the Archer's at Shoals,
Indiana, the Vigilance Committee paid a visit to Kinder. The
vigilantes seized Kinder, forced a noose over his neck, and lifted him
from his feet until he was on the verge of death from strangulation.
The vigilantes were seeking a confession from Kinder for his
crimes against the community. Kinder proclaimed his innocence as
he was strung up over and over again. The vigilantes next whipped
Kinder numerous lashed as he lay semi conscious. Kinder was
ordered to leave the state and never return.
Kinder heeded this advice and was never heard from in Indiana again.
